Honduras has created an unthinkable during after managing to qualify for the FIFA World Cup for a second consecutive time. They were surprise entrants to the World Cup 2010 in South Africa. After managing to salvage pride in this competition, they have managed to do the unthinkable by qualifying for the World Cup 2014. They have been put in a group containing the likes of France and Ecuador. Switzerland are the other group opponents, which has given Honduras a real belief that they can reach the knockout stages if they played exceptionally well.
One of the players who will be key to their hopes of reaching this stage will be Carlo, who is the son of former international Allan Costly. Allan Costly was a defender for the Honduras national team, while his son is a striker. Carlo was heavily influential during the qualification campaign. The 31-year-old has represented the national team 68 occasions and he has scored 30 goals. His presence at the World Cup 2014 will be an occasion to remember for his family, as they are left devastated following his absence of the World Cup 2010 due to an injury.
“The whole team have got a wonderful opportunity to do well at the competition. When you have the chance to play at a World Cup it’s vital that you’re focused. That’s the only way you have a chance of reaching the knockout rounds. I hope they do better than they did in South Africa. Nothing would make me happier than seeing my son finish as the tournament’s top scorer. But things don’t always work out how you want,” said Costly about his son appearing in the World Cup for the first time.
Carlos scored the opening goal in Honduras’ final World Cup qualifying match against Jamaica. Honduras open the competition against France.
